~ Back to work today, I've been off since last Wednesday. Mixed feelings, lol.

~ I made myself a Google calendar for this month. I was dreading December (it's a church musician thing) but it turns out to not be that scarily busy after all. I am elated, people. I'm so tired of dreading the holidays.

~ Oh hey! I can upload Christmas icons again!!! w00t!

~ It feels odd that NaNo is over. I really enjoyed it this year, and will definitely follow the same game plan again next year.

~ Happy 44th birthday to my nephew! Lots more about that in another post. It deserves it's own, trust me. :)

And now I have ten minutes to dry my hair and head out the door. Happy Tuesday everyone!

comments

We're here in North Carolina with our son and daughter in-law. Their first Thanksgiving together, and everything smells wonderful. No worries about her cooking at all! It's a beautiful 65F, and we've just been spending time relaxing.

We're touring the Marine base tomorrow and basically just sightseeing before heading home on Saturday.

Not freaking out <strike>any more</strike> because my laptop got left behind in Miami. Hubby was all "let's go! we're behind schedule!" and I was trying to get things finished, and they were loading the monster dog into the car and we didn't realize it was missing until we got to the hotel at midnight. 13 1/2 hour later.

Oh well, I have 6k left to write and it will have to happen on Sunday and Monday. It will be gibberish, it will be crap, but it will be written. I'm not going to lose NaNo when I'm this close. No way.

Later!

*posting from the son's pc
x-posted

comments

Off to work in a few, but making a list in my head and checking it twice. We're leaving for NC in the morning to spend Thanksgiving with our Marine Son™ and his wife. (Yes, I know I've mentioned in various places except for DW)

I need -

- kitty litter and cat food (the neighbor is coming over to feed the old girls for us)

- headphones/ear buds that don't kill my ears

- to send my NaNo files to the laptop

- clear off a couple of memory cards for mine and the daughter's cameras

- charge batteries or just buy a package of regular ones, b/c the rechargables don't seem to be working well any more

- get cds ready for the car. Hubby has already asked what we were going to listen to, and it's a 12-14 hour drive from here. OMG, if I have to listen to Billy Joel's Greatest Hits one more time I'm going to club him over the head. I love Billy, but good grief, give it a rest, ok? Heh, maybe I'll slip Adam Lambert's new cd into the changer. *g*

- laundry. Eww, tons of it.

- clean like crazy so the Neighbor Who's Feeding the Cats™ doesn't call the health department and report us.

Also, here's hoping for another slow/boring day at work so I can write on my NaNo again. I made yesterday's word count in my office. *g* I know, I said I'd never write at work, but that was when I first started there a year and a half ago. And I'm not saving it to my work pc, I'm using My Writing Nook. I love the word count feature! It counts as you go and displays a running total. I see now that it's also available as an app for iPhone and iPod Touch. Not that I have either, but yanno .... lol.

Alrighty then, must finish getting dressed and head out to work. Later!

x-posted all over

comments

Her music touched a generation. As a ten year old in 1964, I was just beginning to understand what was to become my lifelong passion for music. I was enamored of Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and Lesley Gore, and then my best friend Ellen invited me upstairs to her dad's studio and introduced me to Peter, Paul and Mary. Not in person of course (that wouldn't happen for many years) but to an album of theirs - "Peter, Paul and Mary" - released just two years prior.

The war in Vietnam wasn't a concern of mine, but I had a beloved cousin who was in the Army; there was talk of whether he would go to war. John F. Kennedy had been assassinated only a year before and he had young children and a handsome smile. He had a passion that was contagious and I could relate to him. Civil rights was a term that I only new as segregation, and I couldn't understand it. My best summertime friend, Terry, was black. She lived close to my grandmother's in West Virginia and I carried her school picture in my wallet. In Junior High, when I was suddenly in an integrated school, I fared much better than some of my friends who had been so unfortunate as to have only experienced friends with the same color skin as they. I thought them very unfortunate to have had such a narrow existence.

Mary Travers sang of love, she sang of fairy tales, she sang of lemon trees and cruel wars and I sang right along with her. I learned to strum a guitar from Sears and Roebuck and I bought a Peter, Paul and Mary songbook. I was in heaven - now I could really play along with her!

Her songs brought me to tears because I understood what was in between the lines. I got it. Not everyone did.

Fast forward forty years.

I'm a professional musician -singer, director, teacher, and now editor- and Peter Yarrow was one of my husband's clients. I met him on several occasions, but then came the night in 2004 when we went backstage to meet Paul Stookey and Mary Travers. I was able to clown with Peter for a photograph and tell Paul how much "The Wedding Song" had meant to me in all the years I'd been singing it, but Mary? Mary was a presence that was almost unapproachable. I knew she was ill, she was in the early stages of leukemia and didn't hang around long for autographs or kind words, but I shared the air in a room with her for a brief moment. I listened as she spoke with others who had gathered and it was enough.

Her death has touched me more than any of the other deaths of celebrities this summer. I admired the others, I enjoyed their work, and maybe even gushed a little when some of them were on screen, but Mary?

Mary touched my life. She touched my heart.

Mary Allin Travers (November 9, 1936 – September 16, 2009)

Peter, Paul and Mary's first album is bright with enthusiasm. No gimmicks. There is just something GOOD about it all. Good in the sense of Virtue, that is. And the news that something this GOOD can be as popular as this is can fill you with a new kind of optimism. Maybe everything's going to be all right. Maybe mediocrity has had it. Maybe hysteria is on the way out. One thing for sure in any case: Honesty is back. Tell your neighbor.
-- from the liner notes for Peter, Paul and Mary, released in 1962

comments

Leaving in about half an hour to take daughter for back-to-school checkup. Appointment isn't until 2:30 but they said they'd try to get us in early if we were there by 1:45. Why? Because we got tickets to the the Jonas Brothers tonight and have to be miles away at the amphitheater before 5:30 to pick them up. The pediatric practice is so huge now that it takes forever to get in and she has to have school forms for next Monday.

So, after that we will head directly to her bff's house so she can change into her sparkly JoBros t-shirt, red skinny jeans, and her new black Converse sneakers that she bought yesterday with her own money. w00t!!!

I took today off. I had so many things to get done today, no time to do it all, and when the cat barfed all over the bed it was an omen.

:)

Catch you all tomorrow!

comments
